I've been listening closely to Shawn to see if he'd drop any hints of things he'd like for his birthday. One idea that I got was that he'd really like to take Joshua to a Barnstormers game and have some father-son time. I looked online for tickets, and I found some really good seats that were cheap on Craig's List. So, I called and picked them up. Then, we got Joshua ready to see some baseball!
I dug out the Bean's glove we had bought him for his birthday, and we played catch. I also took out his 'better batter ball' that Mamaw gave him and we listened to the sounds it made (batter up, knock it out of the park, music, etc). Daddy also turned on the TV to a game the night before so Joshua could see what they were in for (we've found he does WAY better if he's been prepared for what's coming).Wednesday night, he was ready! They sat right behind first base in front row seats. Joshua got to see Cylo (the mascot) dancing and he danced, too, much to everyone's pleasure. Also because of the seats, he was picked out of the crowd to be in a contest for who makes the most noise. Daddy helped him shake his 'Rally Roni' box [the Lancaster Barnstormers sell boxes of macaroni noodles for a dollar and then all the food goes to the Water Street Mission, which is a great program]. The contest came down to Joshua & another child, but Joshua lost interest too quickly. The other child continued to shake his box and won. Daddy was thrilled to see his little man on the big screen!
Then as the first baseman was coming back, he singled Joshua out of the crowd (having the front row seat and looking so charming) and threw him a ball. Joshua beamed as he told me that the nice man gave him a ball. He was SO excited and has his ball in his bedroom.
Joshua also told me that they got 'snacks' (another baseball highlight!). They left before the game was over, but they had an incredible time. The guy I bought the tickets from has a bunch more games available, so the boys may go again or we may try to go as a family. Either way, Shawn said it was a great time and great early birthday gift. Joshua still talks about his baseball game with Daddy. I'm glad they had fun!
