Leaf Me Play, Please!

On Saturday, we continued to work around the house. The list is never ending! We raked and raked and raked and picked up leaves. Joshua actually helped (Caleb napped). Shawn did a majority of the work. He is such a worker!
We also went to church last night. We were supposed to meet another couple from our small group, Don & Melanie, to sit together and then go to their house afterward to eat dinner. But she called to say that Don got a nasty cold (there is a lot going around!) so we rescheduled for Wednesday night. We thought we may meet up with Angel & Becca to sit together (she always works afterward - she's an ultrasound tech who works the graveyard shift on weekends), but Becca called to say that their daughter Alayna has a cold so they were staying home. Shawn & I decided we were all going no matter what, and then we ended up running into John & Angie, yet another couple from our small group, and so we sat with them. Caleb made it through the end of the speaking until he started getting fussy since it was time for his dinner. I was paged out right as they were starting to take offering - but without thinking when we were sitting down, I sat in the very middle of the row and we were toward the front of the sanctuary. So, I all but had to body surf out to go get the baby.
Since the service was over, I decided to pack him up and feed him at home rather than make Shawn & Joshua wait the half hour while I fed him in the nursery. But, I guess after the speaking they played more music. So, we were waiting with Caleb fussing in his car seat. So, I ventured down the stairs with the heavy car seat in tow (not a big deal until you factor in my high heels), and I picked up the Bean from his class. Once again I had all sorts of artwork in my hand, the diaper bag, Caleb & the car seat, and Joshua. Only this time the Bean was an angel. As Joshua & I were holding hands up the stairs, he started to pull away...I asked him what was up and he SHOUTED "Poop!" (grunting) "Poop-poop!" I could have died...there was a woman walking up the stairs behind him, and all the sudden the STINK came. Great timing, son! We caught up with Shawn and eventually got to the car and got things taken care of.
After we made it home and all ate dinner, I bathed both kids and got them in their jammies. Then we started watching a movie on our new TV - a story in and of itself - but I couldn't keep my eyes open again. We've been working hard around our house, coupled with caring for kiddos - I just didn't have any energy left. So, it was off to bed for us. After all, it's been after 10 pm each night til we even think about starting to sit down to do something quiet like that. And, at that time the 'quiet' activity that sounds best is snoring!!!

Shop 'Til We Drop Takes On a Whole New Meaning

Just like last year, Joshua spent the night at Nonie & Poppy's house. Only this year I didn't bawl the entire time. I thought of him endlessly, but I said a quick prayer each time he came to mind, which helped. So, Shawn stayed up late looking at the ads when I physically couldn't keep my heavy eye lids open anymore (all that turkey and no nap!), and then he got up before the dawn's light to do some ordering online. I actually slept in past our usual time of getting up, and then I had to feed little Caleb Luke and dress him. We got a late start, but there wasn't much we actually needed to buy. We went to the mall, and we couldn't find a parking spot. Just as we were about to leave, a woman told us that she was leaving and to follow her to her car. It was as a GREAT spot, right up front. Hooray! I started out wearing Caleb but eventually Daddy took him. We literally walked all over the mall and didn't buy a single thing. The lines were crazy! But, it was fun to be together and hang out. We ran into the couple we had just had over from small group...well, we ran into Chris who was looking for Lisa. :)
From there, we went to Chili's to enjoy a nice lunch out together. Caleb fell asleep in his car seat next to me, and Shawn & I talked about Christmas lists and all sorts of things. Our service there was excellent - we were impressed. When our bellies were once again filled to overflowing, we headed to Walmart in Ephrata, where we spent more money than I would care to admit. We bought shatter-proof Christmas decorations, stocking stuffers for the boys, and a couple other little things that added up to a bunch of money. We did buy Caleb a little jumping seat that you don't need to hang in a doorway that I think he will LOVE. And diapers....and all sorts of other stuff that you just find at Walmart that you need. :)
Speaking of Walmart, I was flabbergasted (sp?) at the news story that we read online first and heard Mike Huckabee (who I just adore) talk about on Fox news last night...the one that people trampled to death a 34-year-old Walmart worker who was opening the doors on Black Friday and injured an 8-month pregnant woman. Part of me can believe it seeing some of the nuts out there at 4 am (we've been there before to see for ourselves how nasty people can get over sales!), but part of me wonders how people can step on another human and not stop to help them up. It makes me sick to my stomach, truly. Shawn & I have gone out every year on Black Friday since we've been dating. We enjoy the tradition of it, the fun of finding gifts for family & friends, the thrill of good deals, etc. But, thanks to Shawn's easygoing nature and his influence in my life, we just try not to get too excited if something doesn't go our way or get too annoyed at the crowds bumping into you. The idea is to enjoy yourself and start getting into the Christmas spirit, the kind that helps others not hurts anyone.
Leaving Walmart, which wasn't that busy by that time of day, we headed the rest of the way to Reading to pick up our much-missed Bean. We headed home and started decorating the house for the holidays, which has become a tradition in our house. Joshua was soooo cute this year. He squealed with delight "A tree! Daddy, a tree! Lights! Tree! A tree!" He was so excited he could barely get it out. Then, he thought about it, went down and got his little seat from his drum set, brought it up, and perched himself right next to his beloved lit up tree. That's before the decorations were even on it!
It's so hard when you're two and it's natural to explore your world through touch to hold yourself back from touching all the pretty new shiny decorations. He so desperately wants to touch the snowmen, the Christmas balls, Santa, the nativity scene, and everything else in our house. But, he's been pretty good so far at just looking and not touching. :) I got out the snowman that Grandma & Grandpa Ginder gave him last year, and he remembered that it lit up and made music! He immediately grabbed its hand and danced as it played the LOUD tune "We Wish You a Merry Christmas!" Shawn keeps hiding it from him when he's heard it enough times. Joshua could play it for hours... We were more than exhausted, but it was a fun day all in all.

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble

Thanksgiving Day was a flurry of activity for us. We had my family over for lunch - here is a picture of the cousins, starting from left to right, it's Faith, Daniel, Emma, Joshua, Grace and Caleb. Everything went well, I thought, except for Mike slicing off his thumb (or nearly slicing off his entire thumb). He thought the turkey was slipping off the counter as he was cutting it, but instead it was the knife falling. He reached out to grab it as it was decending and it sliced right through, blood literally gushing everywhere. I have never seen so much blood - all over the cupboards, literally all over my kitchen floor, on my fridge, on my dishwasher, in the sink, and even on mom's pants. He refused to go to the hospital, but I told them over and over again that I thought he should. We got him some gauze and antibiotic ointment and cleaned everything up. He was pale as a ghost. Hopefully it heals well!
Joshua was starving until we got up to the table, ate a little applesauce and then decided he wanted down. I'm starting to recognize that big crowds are overwhelming to him. I see that he gets so excited by everyone being there and yet I think it's a little much for him to process yet. It was also past his typical nap time, so he opted for his bed rather than more lunch. Joshua barely ate anything at either meal. But, I know he'll eat when he's hungry. I had a dream last night, though, that his legs looked like twigs that were about to snap and I was bawling to Shawn about it...then woke up to Joshua telling us "Good Morning!!!" I know I must not worry...God loves our Bean and will guide us in how to take care of him.
Unfortunately, I also wasn't thinking that the rest of my family didn't have anywhere else they needed to go that evening (Becky's in-laws were traveling, and Jen's in-laws had gotten together a week or two before for Thanksgiving). So, they were hoping to stay and play games and we had promised to go to Nonie & Poppy's. I told everyone they were welcome to stay even though we had to go, but all declined and parted ways (Jen's kids also needed a nap, Mom was leaving before the crack of dawn to head to Myrtle Beach, and it wouldn't make much sense for Becky & Tim to hang out by themselves at our house...ha!).

So, after we cleaned up and everyone left, we packed up the kids and headed to Berks County for another scrumptious feast. (Can't figure out why I gained two pounds in only a few days? Ugh!) At both meals, we went around the table saying what we were thankful for. Last year Shawn announced little Caleb was coming at my family's event when we did that. This year, he said "I'm thankful when God takes one home, he brings two more to add to the family" meaning Caleb and Jen's new baby. However, it sounded like he was making a different kind of announcement that made us all (including me!) gasp. We were all thankful for our dear family, friends, our many financial blessings, and God's grace in our lives.
I really enjoyed hanging out at Mike & Bonnie's and talking to Bonnie's sister Linda about raising boys. Joshua & Jordon played and played and played. They both were having a great time! So, Joshua spent the night, and Jordon came over the next morning to play some more. Shawn & I left there after 8 pm and headed home to feed Caleb and put him to bed. Then, we started browsing the ads for Black Friday but soon I couldn't keep my eyes open. I drifted off to sleep as Shawn continued to shop...

Today's Treasure

Psalm 90:14 "Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days."

According to Proverbs 19:22, a man's greatest desire is "unfailing love" and John 4:16 tells us "God is love." After reading that today, I decided to go back and switch the word "God" for "Love" in 1 Corinthians 13... "GOD is patient, GOD is kind. He does not envy, He does not boast, He is not proud. He is not rude, He is not self-seeking, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs. GOD does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. GOD never fails."

This Thanksgiving, I am most thankful for a loving God, who loves us completely and satisfies our deepest desire for unfailing love. According to Beth Moore, when God fills us with His Holy Spirit and meets our inmost need for love, it lets others off the hook for having to boost us emotionally - if anyone else shows us love it's "overflow." He is a great Savior! And, I'm thankful He showed me His love through my wonderful family and friends. May each one be blessed through Him!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The past couple of days have been busy ones, but we've spent them with friends. :) Sunday night Pastor Matt & Joanne and their girls stopped in for icecream. It's always nice to see them. Then Monday night, we went to the Garner's house for dinner. We feasted on chili served in bags of corn chips and ate a Mexican fiesta. It was delicious! But, the best was the company. Joshua & Jude get along so well, and Julie & Dan are so very kind. We had a wonderful time. But, once again I didn't take my camera. Dang it!Then last night we had Chris & Lisa and their daughter Isabella over for dinner. They are one of the families in our life group. Even though I said they didn't need to bring anything, they brought along pumpkin roll for dessert...it was FABULOUS! And, we enjoyed hanging out with them, too. This morning we've been listening to Christmas music and playing. Favorites have included "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer," "The Twelve Pains of Christmas," "The Hallelujah Chorus," "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" and "Santa Baby" by Marilyn Monroe plus many more! We've had fun playing and reading books. Bean cracks me up everyday. Today he was saying "Wait a minute! No now! Wait a minute! No now!" To who? Who knows... He's so funny!Tomorrow my side of the family will be here for Thanksgiving dinner at noon and then we will head to Nonie & Poppy's house for supper. Friday we have planned our typical Black Friday shopping excursion and decorating. We also hope to get some yardwork and housework done this weekend - hopefully we can have fun and be productive. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!!

Prayer Request

Mom just called and told me that Jamie's brother, Charlie, just died. Please keep her, Rosie (Charlie's wife) and their whole family in your prayers.

Today's Treasure

"I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart." Jeremiah 24:7

Winter Wonderland

I rubbed my eyes this morning when I looked out the window...only the whiteness didn't go away. I kid you not, there is snow on the rooftops, on the ground, and still coming down. Here is a view down our street...the trees look so pretty (however, unfortunately, there are still leaves covering much of the ground since we've had a windy couple of days - we'll all have dead grass!!!). After breakfast, I started bundling up the Bean (thanks, Aunt Alicia & Jordon, for lending us the coat, pants, mittens, hat and boots...they came just in time and fit perfectly!). Joshua was excited as I got on his pants, was okay with the shoes, sprang right into his jacket, wasn't thrilled about the hat...but then came the darn mittens! They took me over 10 minutes to get on, as I tried to explain that his thumb needed to come through and he did NOT want them on. Ugh! Eventually, we both worked it out and a different pair of mittens did the trick. Next, I got Caleb in his outfit. It's a little small, but it did the trick for now! He was happy to be outside in the bouncy seat for awhile but soon started to cry. Here's our house in the snow...and it's not even Thanksgiving!!! I thought Joshua looked so cute, I couldn't help but snap a few pictures before we started to play. First thing he said? "Whoa! What's this?" I howled...were you expecting anything else? The first thing he did was to bat snow off my car...then he wasn't thrilled that his gloves were wet. Oh, silly boy! I put the camera down soon so we could play. With one parent and two kids, pictures of every moment are a thing of the past... Before we headed in, I decided to take a couple more, and my camera fogged up.Enjoy the winter wonderland!!! Tonight, Daddy & I are going on a date, and the boys are going to Grandma's house. Hooray! I hope to have some hot cocoa with whipped cream soon...mmmmm.

Happy 26-month birthday, the Bean!

Joshua is so much fun these days! Literally almost every night before turning out the lights, Shawn & I share with each other what Joshua said that was the funniest to us. We laugh and laugh - he brings us so much sunshine!
Today he woke up from his nap and said, "Hi, Bean!" then I heard more talking (to himself) and a prompt "Uh-oh!" I knew it couldn't be good - I told him it was okay to come on out. He immediately ran for his "Clifford-Foof-Foof Book" and asked me to read it to him and rock. He loves to lift up the flaps, but his memory is too good - he knows where Clifford is on every page and no longer lifts the millions of other options where he's not.My favorite thing that he's saying these days is "WOW! What's this?" He says that at least 10 times an hour as he's discovering new things and building his vocabulary, which gets better by the day. I'm surprised by things that he knows already! Today he cracked me up when he said, "Oh, man!" when a toy fell. He sounded just like me! He also told me that he was being "careful!" before I said it when he was at the top of the stairs. Each day, I giggle at his personality coming through. He loves to play with Caleb and puts his face near Caleb's hands so that his brother will grab his cheek or nose and then he laughs and says "that's silly!" Joshua also loves to turn the pages in his books by himself when I'm not available to read to him, and he LOVES to color. He also insists on every boo-boo getting a kiss to be "all better," even if they're our boo-boo's.He still loves to cuddle occasionally, too, but not as much as he once did. He also loves to say "JUMP!" but still can't seem to get both feet off the ground at the same time. My favorite thing he does is sings. Last night in the Wal-mart parking lot, he sang me the entire "How much is that doggie in the window" song. I think he'll be a hoot at Christmas! I was trying to work with him to say "We wish you a Merry Christmas!"This morning at MOPS, he went right through the little door to play with no tears. He was also FANTASTIC the whole way out. So, I was relieved that I didn't have to relive our earlier experience. :) I think he thinks through things more now. I can see some shread of logic between his actions, and he understands more when we explain things to him. I also will guess at some of the things he's saying that I don't fully comprehend, and if I don't get it right, he'll shake his head and proclaim "NO!" He's also learned the concept of "mine." And, at night, he now likes to be under the covers and asks us to pull up his "colors" as we tuck him in. He must have his beloved blankey, his washable t-bear (thanks, Ma-maw!) and the "colors" to be fully comfortable. He now says "night-night, t-bear, (kisses it) I'll see you in the morning!" So sweet!
Joshua also says "I love you" which melts my heart. I don't know if he understands it yet or not, but I think so. He does say it repeating us.Joshua's curioisity is also getting bigger by the day, which I know is normal but it also can drive me crazy-go-nuts! He is now getting into everything, and things that were once high out of his reach are now within reach. So, it's often that we hear "Woa - what's this?" and he's got something he shouldn't have. He digs through drawers and doors and throws things around after careful examination. He is a sponge, and I know this is his way of learning about the world. But, I feel like he once again needs constant supervision whereas for awhile I didn't think he was getting into much anymore. Oh, was I wrong! He is testing our boundaries daily to make sure that things are still not okay and that we'll follow through when we say we'll give him a spanking or a time out. Some days I'm completely exhausted til the end of the day (like today). Most days, though, I wouldn't trade my job for all the tea in China. Joshua is so precious! And so is his brother! I love my boys. Happy 26-month birthday, Bean!

MOPS Fun

I realize I never posted about our MOPS playdate last week! So, here goes... we've been talking at MOPS about having a playdate for some time. I offered to have everyone at our house because we weren't sure what, when, where or how, and I've been feeling like we need to open our home up more to be a blessing to others. Being brutally honest, there are times that I feel like our house isn't nice enough to have people over and then there are times that I don't want our things to get destroyed. Both are absolutely ridiculous sine we love people in general and we love our house - it's no mansion but it's perfect for us. And, honestly, I'm most comfortable at houses that aren't extraordinarily fancy because I feel like I can be myself - and I'm not there to see or be impressed by the home. Again, people are what matter! The greatest commandments? Love God first and above all and then love others! So, we set the date for Wednesday, November 12, for a moring gathering of sorts. Poor Joshua was starting to get a runny nose, but I told the other moms who didn't seem to mind. That night, though, is when I started to feel somewhat yucky and I felt bad that we may have spread our germs. I haven't heard from anyone else, though, that they feel sick. After I offered to have everyone here, I counted all the "possible" people and children and realized that with kids, our group could have 23! Wow! So, I thought maybe we should try some pudding painting or something constructive so it wasn't chaos. It ended up that only three other moms could make it, though, which ended up being a nice size group with kids and all. Anyway, first to arrive was Becca and Alayna (pictured above). Next arrived Margie, who doesn't live far from us, and her adorable son Henry (both pictured below).
Later, Renee arrived with her two kids, Nathan and Lila/Laila (sp?). As you can see from the pictures below, they were the best at the finger painting with pudding. This little gal LOVED to put her hands in the bowl and paint her paper. It was absolutely adorable! And funny! She even started licking the bowl!Nathan, who's a couple years older than Joshua, loved his toys, especially the baseball ones. Joshua fell apart that morning at first as children started playing with his toys, but I gave him a little time to cool off and regroup in his bedroom, and I was astounded at how well it worked. He came back down in ten minutes a brand new kid. And, I think he enjoyed playing then. Little did I know that he was getting a severe cold - and not that I like to make excuses - but it is hard to be sweet and nice and self-controlled when you're not feeling well.
I didn't snap too many pictures that morning. We were too busy watching all the kids play and chatting and snacking! It was a fun time and we were exhausted afterward. :)Thanks for coming, friends! We'll see you tomorrow at MOPS, hopefully!
