Shawn's birthday this year was Saturday, May 12. When I asked him what he wanted for his birthday, he said he didn't really need more "stuff." What he really wanted was to go back to a tropical island just the two of us. And while I couldn't make that happen, I asked my mom if she'd be willing to watch the boys for us to get away for a night. She agreed! Then Shawn's parents came into town and took the older two boys overnight in their new Coach, so everyone was all set.
Originally I was going to pick Shawn up for lunch on May 11 from work and take him to Atlantic City, but instead he took the day off work. So, we left a little earlier. We stayed at Caesar's on the boardwalk. The weather was supposed to be sunny and in the 80s on Friday, but the wind off the ocean made it chilly. Unfortunately while I had a hooded sweatshirt and thin linen pants, I had only packed flip flops and FROZE! Next time, I will pack for all weather.
We still had a great time. While we LOVE our boys, it was fun to get away and just be a couple. That said, EVERYTHING we saw reminded us of our three little men. On the way there, we decided to pull off and use the potty. The McDonald's that we stopped at had a huge outdoor playground that looked like so much fun! We said if we ever traveled this way again, we would make it a point to stop and let the boys get out and play.
Then, after we arrived since it wasn't check-in time yet, we decided to grab some lunch on the boardwalk. Eventually, we ended up at a Rainforest Cafe, and it was AWESOME! My salad was amazing, but the atmosphere was what was the most incredible. The entire restaurant made you feel like you were in a rainforest with trees and branches and the sound of rain and even a thunderstorm where the lights went low and there was rumble of thunder and lightning flashing. There was a huge elephant and monkeys that moved and made noises and butterflies throughout with flapping wings (all fake but looking so cool!) and then real aquariums of fish. We sat right next to a waterfall. It was GREAT! Again, the kids would LOVE it and we put it on our to-do list with the kiddos.
Then we checked into our hotel, which was nice and overlooked the ocean. We went back out onto the boardwalk and explored the area. What did we see on our walk but "Three Brothers" pizza. I laughed at the name and we had to get a picture of course. We could leave the kids at home, but they were still very much in our hearts.
We remembered the last time we were in Atlantic City, we eventually paid someone to take us on a little ride that they push. This time for old time's sake, we did it again. We checked out the various casinos and places, but we didn't do any concerts or gamble a dime. Part of that was my fault. I was exhausted by the time it got late! I'm an early riser and had exercised that morning before leaving, plus we had walked all over. We got drinks at happy hour, and that ended up being our dinner because I was beat from all the exploring. We were right next to the mall and all the shops and there was even a light show that we tried to see multiple times but missed because it happened exactly on the hour and we never made it at just the right time. Such is life!
In the morning while we hoped to do more, especially with all the shops near us, it was POURING! We talked about what to do, and eventually we decided to check out a little early and head home in hopes of making it to Joshua's T-ball game. But, that got rained out as well.
The older two boys had fun with Mamaw & Papaw exploring their new 'wheels' and Ryan had a great time with my Mom. We had had a great time too and look forward to our next trip. Happy birthday, my handsome husband!
