Saturday night (October 1) our family went mattress shopping. We had done some research online trying to figure out what makes a good mattress. We researched brands, coils, foam types, thickness, warranties, etc. etc. Then we hit a few local stores. The first store I went into by myself just to get a feel for it while Shawn waited with the kids in the car. The salesman was nice enough, and eventually I found a bed that was fantastic and even 50%... of $7,000+!!! We decided to keep looking. Yikes! Our mattress was fantastic when we got it. I remember feeling like a queen sleeping on it! But, we realized that over 11 years later, it had served its purpose and was past its useful life. (We even had coils that were poking out of the side of it - it dipped in the middle, etc.) Anyway, the second store we went to was an el cheap-o outlet place that Shawn went into first and I stayed with the kids in the car. I eventually took everyone in, but these mattresses were thin and pretty lame. At the third store, we found one that was similar to what I had printed out to be a 'best-bang-for-the-buck' or Top 5% Best Value for what it offered compared to price. We both laid on several in the store, and we agreed that for the money, this one was probably our best bet. We opted to get a king size and a new sturdy steel bed frame for underneath it.
It was a lot of money to us, but with Shawn's surgery and knowing that he was going to be laid up for a few days, we looked at it as in investment in his back, which has been bothering him for a long time now. We both felt good about the purchase, I think, realizing that it was necessary and that we had put it off for a long time. On Monday we spent the day rearranging our bedroom and disassembling our old bed so that the company could take our old mattress and box springs away for free. I wondered if maybe just putting our mattress and box springs on the floor without the wood bed we had would make enough of a difference that we would regret buying a new one. But alas, the bed still dipped everywhere and was just as uncomfortable off the wooden frame. We both sighed with relief at knowing we had made the right call.
Sunday, October 2, we went to church as a family in the morning. When we came home, the boys enjoyed a cheese curl snack which has kind of become a tradition in our household. Daddy will buy the boys a small bag of cheese curls to split after church and they LOVE it! They both end up orange (especially my little guy). That afternoon, Daddy went with his brother and their friend to watch a game at the Brickyard so I had the boys help me bake brownies. We knew Mamaw & Papaw were coming into town that evening, and I thought it might be nice to have something to offer them. They even came to our house that night, so it was good to have something to share. :) The boys love to bake!
