God blessed us with three beautiful boys. Joshua Douglas was born on 9/18/06, 15.75" long weighing 3 lbs 4 oz. He stayed in the N.I.C.U. four weeks before coming home & then had the lower section of his left lung removed. He's been doing well ever since! Caleb Luke was born on 7/8/08, 20.5" long weighing 7 lbs 12 oz. Ryan Josiah was born on 6/7/11, 20.25" long weighing 7 lbs 14 oz. Praise God for our miracle babies!

Happy 4.5 Year Birthday, Caleb Luke!
Caleb turned 54 months on Tuesday, January 8. This marked exactly 4.5 years, and because he has a summer birthday, his teacher asked if we could celebrate his half birthday with his preschool class. I thought that was extremely thoughtful of her - I have a summer birthday and never really got to celebrate with my classmates and friends. Mrs. Hurlbert wore a big birthday hat (it is a cake with candles on top - really cute) and greeted him at the door. She allowed us to take in a special snack (no cupcakes) so we took in Oreos and pretzels (what he requested) and we allowed him to hand out Pez to each one of his classmates as they were leaving since he is a Pez-aholic! He said that they sang to him, and he got a gift of a new Curious George book. He said he had a fun morning!
Caleb told me that his favorite part of the morning was when they had a snowball fight with socks! He said the girls threw them at him and he was supposed to throw them back. He said, "It was SO MUCH FUN!" I asked him if they were their socks or whose socks and he said "Nobody's socks!" so I'm guessing the teacher took in extra white socks to play with as snowballs. What a great idea. He LOVED it! Their letter this week was 'S' and they made lots of cute little snowman crafts, and he took in a starfish for show 'n tell after we thought of every 'S' word we could.
At 3 pm on Tuesday, I took the boys to get professional pictures to mark Caleb's milestone of 4.5 years. The lady was awful! Most of the pictures weren't aligned at all, and Ryan had no interest in being there. She wasn't great with the kids. But, Caleb is at an age where he will smile on command, and we did get some cute ones of him, praise God! That's really why I was there anyway. These pictures are from that sitting.
My little man has had another growth spurt. His 5T jeans even seem a little short these days. And this outfit is a 5/6 that I had purchased for his older brother. Caleb often wears Joshua's shoes, so I also think it's time to get his feet measured again to make sure he hasn't grown into the next size.
Caleb is my pickiest eater these days. He mostly likes carbs - plain noodles, bread and cheese. He also loves fruit. I'm sure this is a phase that will pass.
My little man still loves to color and he's been using his new "150 crayons" to color his rocket ship. We are on the last panel. Soon it will be time to build it!
My little buddy has found enjoyment in doing word finds in his puzzle books. These used to be too difficult for him, but he's doing well with matching the letters and finding the words. I love to see his little mind work! He told me that he wants to go to kindergarten next year, and academically I think he's more advanced than most kids in Joshua's class this year. But, socially, Caleb is so shy. I think another year in preschool may be good for him. We'll see what his teacher thinks. It's soon time to decide. But, Caleb loves to do math with Joshua (when it's saying equations out loud), he writes well, and he honestly has more artistic ability than I remember his brother having at this age. I think with Caleb being the second oldest, he's also more willing to try new things.
Caleb is a night owl and HATES to go to bed. He outlasts Joshua and Ryan by over an hour most nights. We are constantly putting him back to bed. But, this is also one-on-one time he gets with us as his parents where he likes to snuggle and be center of attention. He is SO like his Daddy! In almost every way he reminds me of Shawn.
Recently we all got sick. Everyone in our house was under the weather, except Caleb. He's the only one who showed no symptoms - no stomach bug, no colds, no nothing. He has a really good immune system. Praise the Lord!
Happy 4.5 year birthday, Caleb Luke!
Happy 19 Month Birthday, My Little Ham Ball!
On Monday, January 7, Ryan turned 19 months old. And as much as I hate to admit it, he seems more like a toddler than a baby to me these days. First, his vocabulary has increased tremendously, even in the last month. And somehow my once-quiet boy has turned into a chatter box! He will wave and say "Hi!" to everyone we come in contact with. He also says "Bye" which he often accompanies with "THANK YOU!" (which sounds more like "tan-gu"). People who see him smile and say "My, what a friendly little boy you have!"
Ryan was cracking me up over the weekend. I literally LAUGHED and LAUGHED! He put on this hat and asked me to put on his glasses (which sounds more like "gleaks"). Then he says "CHEESE!" clearly waiting to get his picture taken. And since Caleb loves to take pictures with his camera he got for Christmas, you can see brothers in action (in our very messy toy room).
Ryan woke up this morning saying "I hungry! I want cookies!" When I told him we don't eat cookies for breakfast, he said "I want pizza!" I said "Nope, no pizza for breakfast either." He thought for a minute and said "Oh-gurt" (or yogurt, another favorite of his). Unfortunately, he ate the last one the day before. So I suggested french toast sticks. They are not his favorite, but he ate them up! He was hungry! He's also trying new things lately. He enjoys cheese now (which he used to hate) and he's been eating cooked carrots. He will ask for a "BITE" of anything we have, even if he has some of his own on his own plate. I've also started giving him silverware, but I'm mess-adverse, so I haven't given him complete reign over some of the drippier foods we partake. I know I should, though! He loves noodles, and he's even started to eat some bread. Peanut butter crackers are another favorite. But, he's eating much more of a variety these days, which makes me happy. And he's drinking milk like a champ. Phew! God is good!
My little love bug LOVES books! His favorites are the "COUGH" book, which he asks for every night ("Don't You Feel Well, Sam?" is the real name of it), the "MOMMY" book (or "I Love My Mommy"), the "Boo Zoo" book ("Peekaboo Zoo"), the "HIPPOS!" book, the "PUPPIES!" book ("I Am a Puppy"), the "CAKE" book ("You Can Do It, Sam"), the "KISS!" book ("Kiss Good Night") and the new "TREES" book ("The Tale of the Three Trees"). He asks for each book by the name he has for it, and we read for a long time in his rocking chair before we pray, sing "We Were Born to Worship" and then I tuck him in bed with his froggy blankey and his cup, which I fill with water after putting him to bed and give it back to him. Before I take him to his room at night, he says "Night-night!" to his brothers and Daddy and gives each one a goodnight kiss. They are all very gentle and loving with sweet little Ryan.
But, Ryan isn't always sweet and gentle. His favorite game to play is "OVER!" which is what he screams as he pushes on us (when we're sitting down and encourage him) and he tries to knock us over with a big hug. He laughs hysterically and then helps us up to do it again. I said to Shawn that I hope Ryan doesn't try to knock over other kids or adults since we play this game with him often. So far, it hasn't been an issue.
Ryan loves all people except photographers. If I leave him at Universal, Sunday School or other childcare places like that, he smiles and waves goodbye. But, if I so much as sit him in front of a photographer, he cries like I'm abandoning him or worse! We went to get Caleb's pictures the day after Ryan's birthday, and the photographer was not fantastic. In most pictures Ryan wasn't looking, happy or smiling. UGH! Such is life. I know that this, too, shall pass.
I took Ryan to the doctor's office toward the beginning of the month because he'd had a cold for a solid month. They put him on antibiotics for a sinus infection, and he has been doing amazingly well since. I'm glad he's feeling better! He has been talking up a storm, so I'm hoping that his ears have cleared as well. He's stringing lots of words into sentences too ("Peekaboo! I see ya!" and "Bye-bye, thank you, night-night!" as well as "Bite! I want some! Pizza, cookies - hungry!"). He's fun to listen to (most times!).
He sleeps well, taking a nap in the afternoon and sleeping solidly from about 8 pm until almost 8 am. He is my best sleeper by far! He's not interested in TV at all, but he loves to play with toys. Dinosaurs, balls and cars are his favorites, along with puzzles. He also loves to act like he's on the telephone and will say "Hallo!" He knows most animals and the sounds they make, and he knows all his body parts. We're starting to work on shapes and colors.
One strange thing about Ryan is that he HATES getting his coat on. He doesn't seem to mind his hat anymore, but he runs away from us when we go to put his coat on and cries like we're trying to hurt him when we put it on. He HATES it. I even switched coats, going to the next size up, wondering if it was too restrictive. It hasn't seemed to help. Aw, buddy, I'm sorry that you MUST wear it since it's cold outside! I don't force him to wear gloves, though, because he won't keep them on and he still sucks his thumb (especially after the trauma of getting his coat on). And since we walk Joshua to school every day and always go out on weekends, he fights us every day OFTEN about his coat.
While some 18-month pants are still too big for him in the waist, I need to get out the 24-month bin of clothes because most of his things are too short on him now. I also need to get to the shoe store to get his feet measured because his sneakers look far too small on his growing feet. I'd say we've definitely seen a growth spurt in all our boys this past month.
I'm sure there's more I could write, but this is a good 'snapshot' of Ryan Josiah at 19-months. Happy birthday, buddy!

Lancaster Science Factory
Over the summer, I signed up on the waiting list for some of the museum passes the Lancaster Library offers. I got an email on Friday saying that the one for the Lancaster Science Factory was finally ready for pick-up! So, this morning after we went to Universal as a family, we picked up the pass and then headed over. The boys were immediately intrigued by the car roller coaster (in the photo above). Then they started building some K'nex things until Daddy urged us to go check out the "cooler" attractions.
Ryan immediately fell in love with these balls. You lift all three up and the force of the bounce of the bottom one sends the top one shooting back up. He would have stayed there all day if we would have let him, and any time he ran off, this is where he went.
Caleb said he loved to watch these balls go around and around and into this black hole.
One of my favorites was watching Shawn & Joshua race their cars across the straight and "hilly" paths.
Joshua struggled to launch the tennis ball into the air, while Caleb could pull it with ease. They LOVED this one!
And here's Caleb testing the law of motion.
The boys watched what happens when you fill this contraption up with sand - it empties in a pattern.Shawn asked us if this straight bar could fit through the curved hole, and while we guessed no, we were wrong. It went right through!
We picked which ball would finish the race first on this one:
And the boys tried to put their wheels together to go round and round here with these magnets.
And the older version complied with my wish - after he took off his glasses, of course.
Then Daddy motioned me into this little room of mirrors - the human kaleidoscope! FUN! Wish I had something like this when I'm doing my hair in the morning!
Caleb loved filling this hot air balloon up and watching which way the wind would take it!
This one was my person favorite - the hover craft. It would lift off the ground! And it said it was only for children and "small adults" but I did it just fine!
My favorite picture of the day was of Caleb below!
And Daddy got one of me on the hover craft!
I forget why the wind was important in this one...
We tried to build a dam to stop the water flow. Joshua LOVED this one in particular!
Caleb's absolute favorite was this ball launcher that took balls from one end of the place to the other via some air mechanism. It was really fun!
Ryan tried to move the wind for the sailboats.
And the boys LOVED talking to each other (these were at opposite ends of the room) through these dishes. It was amazing how they worked!
There were other experiments we tried, but these were the few I captured on the camera when I wasn't playing or running after the Schnook. We had a fun afternoon! We are blessed that the library offers passes to museums like these! Good times for the Good family!
The End of 2012
On Friday, December 28, Shawn & I hired our babysitter and had a takeout dinner and did some exchanging and shopping. It was fun to be together and get things done!
The following morning, we took the boys to Mamaw's house and went to the 'viewing' of our neighbor Riley. I wore a black dress borrowed from Mom with a red cardigan sweater, since everyone was asked to wear something red, Riley's favorite color. It was SO sad! We looked at all the pictures and hugged the family members tearfully.
By the time we left and got our boys, the snow was coming down pretty good. And we realized that even with how heavy my minivan is, it STINKS in the snow! Shawn was sliding around like crazy, and he was taking it easy. UGH!!!
While Shawn shoveled our sidewalks, Caleb went out to play with him. Joshua had just started playing his DSi and decided he'd rather stay in than go out (a decision he later regretted, so I made a mental note). Caleb had a BLAST playing outside with Shawn. I stayed inside with a schnarky Schnook (who I took to the doctor's on Friday to get antibiotics for his sinus infection - praise the Lord, the baby is feeling MUCH better these days!). My dear husband hadn't bothered to put any gloves on himself, so while I was dressing Caleb, I also dug out Shawn's gloves and hat, etc. which he gratefully put on. They launched snowballs and dug with shovels and just had fun being together. :) It was fun to watch from the warmth of inside our house.
On Sunday, December 30, we had our final family Christmas gathering at Nonie & Poppy's house. We ate and ate and ate the delicious breakfast spread they had prepared - biscuits with sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, homemade waffles, potatoes, bacon and fruit. It was super yummy! Then we watch the kids open their gifts and hung out as the kids played. It was a fun time! I couldn't find my camera before we left (here it was buried in the office under some paperwork) but Nonie took some pictures with Poppy's camera - they are what you're seeing in this post.
When we got home, we watched a movie called "The Very First Noel," which I would highly recommend to any mamas reading this blog. It was extremely cute and based on the Bible's account of the wise men's journey to find Jesus. The boys loved it and we've watched it a couple times since. :) Thus ended Christmas 2012 for our family.

Truth: Day 24
Philippians 2:5-8
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
I'll be honest in saying that we didn't complete day 24 of the Truth in the Tinsel project until after Christmas. We got sick and then busy...BUT, I did want to finish the project. So, we read the verse above and talked about why Jesus - being God - would come to earth. Caleb said it was because He loved us, and Joshua said it was to save us from our sin. Yes, both answers were correct. We made these pipe-cleaner and bead crosses to remind us of Jesus' purpose for coming to earth. The boys enjoyed this craft! And they sang "Jesus Loves the Little Children" as they were creating it - I think the colors of the beads reminded them of this tune... 'red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight.'
It. Is. Finished.
